South Eugene High School Drama to Perform at International Festival

Margaret Bull

A drama troupe from South Eugene High School was selected to perform a Broadway production at the International Thespian Festival.

41 students will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, and represent the community for a week in late June.

Pat Avery, South’s drama director, takes pride in his students’ success. Avery says they are more than willing to accept the challenges of performing on the road.

“This is the first time we’ve ever gone—we’ve ever showcased a show,” Avery explains. “It’s the only production from the 11 Western states that will be there. All the other productions are from the East or the Midwest, and it’s pretty significant.”

Avery and his students will perform “Be More Chill,” which gives audiences an honest look at what it means to be a high schooler these days. This is the first time the play will be performed by a non-professional theater troupe.

A revival of the comedy-musical is scheduled for June 15th and 2pm and 7pm, and June 16th at 2pm. Proceeds will help the "Be More Chill" cast, crew, and chaperones travel to the International Thespian Festival.
