Dozens of racers sped down Skinner Butte this Saturday during the 2nd Annual EUGfun! Coffin Races. A few of the participants donned bathrobes, David Bowie outfits, a pumpkin suit, and more.
A crowd of over a thousand onlookers cheered on several elaborately designed soapbox cars. There was a Viking ship, a Eugene Skinner’s Headstone, and a police coffin.
But, it seems the bulkier structures may have sent a few to an early grave. Because Aaron Shelton with Edge Motor Sports flew past the finish line in more aerodynamic racer.
“It’s mostly wood, the axels and the wheels obviously are metal and the steering, but the entire box is all wood. It’s been really fun and just exciting, adrenaline, I didn’t think we’d do this good necessarily, so pretty awesome,” Shelton said.
Shelton clocked in at 17.26 seconds. Following him was team Talladega Frights at 17.84 seconds and third place went to REI Eugene. A full list of results can be found here.
