Ronan Donovan - "From Wolf Country"

Ronan Donovan - "From Wolf Country"

Fine Art Photography by National Geographic Explorer & conservation photographer Ronan Donovan, highlighting conservation issues to help reframe some of the stuck narratives around modern humans and the non-human world.

Ronan Donovan, wildlife biologist turned conservation photographer, uses
visual storytelling to illuminate stories related to our fellow social mammals to remind us that we are all
connected. His work is coming to Eugene this spring, including a gallery opening of his ‘From Wolf
Country’ Fine Art Photography show and community meet and greet at the New Zone Gallery during
April’s First Friday ArtWalk.
Ronan embeds for months at a time, year after year, with wild families of wolves, chimpanzees, and
mountain gorillas to capture imagery that highlights our shared challenges, behaviors, and family bonds.
His work asks the question: what if modern humans doesn't have to live in conflict with the natural
world?
“As a field biologist turned visual storyteller, I strive to create imagery that brings curiosity and awe to
scientific papers. I add heartbeats to data points,” he says. “My visual work surrounds human
relationships to our fellow social mammals - wolves, chimpanzees, and mountain gorillas. The work is
mission driven, using photos and video to highlight conservation issues helping reframe some of the
stuck narratives around modern humans and the non-human world.”
“The New Zone Artists Collective has a long history of embracing photography as an art medium. The
theme of this show adds the new element of conservation photography to that history and we are very
excited to bring Ronan and his work to Eugene,” says Ralf Huber of the New Zone Gallery. “We have a
lot of interest in the exhibit already, and we look very much forward to the upcoming show.”
The National Geographic exhibit Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan will also be featured at the
Museum of Natural and Cultural History through May 26. Created by National Geographic Society and
the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the exhibit features images and videos highlighting the contrast
between wolves that live in perceived competition with humans and wolves that live without human
intervention and includes stunning images and videos of wild wolves in the Greater Yellowstone
Ecosystem and Ellesmere Island in the high Canadian Arctic.
