Lane County Sheriff Byron Trapp announced Friday that he’ll retire as of April 16th. Trapp has served in the department for 31 years and held the position of sheriff since 2015.
He says he never planned to hold the position long term. He feels the sheriff’s office is in a good place for the transition.
“That was kind of the driving factor or one of the kind of my personal conditions on leaving was to make sure that we were in a spot to absorb the change and the health of our command staff and all staff, I think is at a peak. So, the timing to do that is probably easiest on the organization now.”
Trapp says he’s looking forward to spending more time with family and friends. The Lane County Board of Commisserions voted Tuesday to hold a recruitment process to appoint a new sheriff. The county is accepting applications.
