UO Freshman Class: Academically Prepared, Diverse

KLCC

The University of Oregon's incoming freshman class is the most diverse and academically prepared in the school's history. The class is more than 4,000 students strong.

Roger Thompson is Vice President for Enrollment Management at the U of O.

Thompson: "If we look at academic preparation, high school GPAs, test-scores, the amount of AP, IB, all the college work that they've already completed in high school then they are the most academically prepared entering freshman class we've ever had."

The class is also diverse, with 28 percent minority freshman and more than 10 percent international students. Thompson says more than 700 qualify for Pathway Oregon-- that's a U of O program that gives free tuition to residents who qualify for the federal Pell grant and meet academic standards.

Thompson: "Each of the individuals that make up that freshman class come from so many different backgrounds that it just adds to the strength of the university."

Thompson says it typically takes 4 years and a term for students to graduate from the U of O. The school has about an 87 percent graduation rate.
