As of today, the 4J School District is joining others closing May 8th, due to an organized teacher walkout strike. The Oregon Education Association has declared it a Day of Action, to press lawmakers for more school funds.
4J Spokeswoman Kerry Delf says the district does not endorse or condone walkout strikes or similar activities that disrupt student learning.
“We’ve already extended the end of the school year because of the harsh winter," Delf tells KLCC. "And all of those days will be made up this year, but that means the families have already changed their plans in June, based on the extended school year.
"With this closure on May 8th, the plan is to have that be an unpaid day for our teachers and licensed staff, and not to make up the day at the end of the school year.”
Delf adds scheduled AP and IB tests will go on as planned, as well as sporting events. Other districts, including Bethel and Portland Public Schools, will also close due to the planned walkout.
