Howard Buford Recreation Area Partially Reopens After Wildfire

Last week, a fire at Howard Buford Recreation area burned 51 acres of the east side of Mount Pisgah. The flame was sparked by a mower.

Over the weekend, crews were able to put out the fire and most trails reopened today. The East Trailhead should reopen tomorrow, as well as parts of Trail 6 and Trail 46.

Brett Henry, Lane County Parks division manager, says they still need to evaluate what restoration work needs to be done.

“We’ll just have to take a good look at it and see what we need to do,” says Henry. “We might need to some seeding in the area where there was some extensive burning or fire lines that were cut to prevent erosion when we get into rainy season in the winter.”

The mowing activity that caused the fire was within the guidelines of industrial fire precaution levels. And the cause was ruled accidental.
