Public Health Offers Clarification On Statewide Mask Requirements

Over the last week, Lane County has seen what health officials call a “drastic increase in COVID-19 positive cases” putting the confirmed total at 151. Currently, 37 people are infectious.

Beginning Wednesday, face coverings will be required in all indoor, public spaces. Masking must cover the mouth and nose- to prevent moisture droplets from being expelled into the air.

The statewide mask mandate will be enforced in grocery stores, gyms, and public transit agencies. Public Health spokesperson Jason Davis says masks are also required in bars and restaurants.

“It would be nearly impossible, I think. You are allowed to removed your mask to eat or drink however when you get up from your table to go to the restroom to go somewhere else in the restaurant to pay your bill or whatever it is. That’s when the mask comes into effect.”

Davis says cloth masking is less than ideal but is expected to slow the rate of infections. The face covering requirement is statewide July 1 as per Governor Kate Brown's order.
