FOOD for Lane County Seeks Summer Volunteers

FOOD for Lane County

FOOD for Lane County is seeking volunteers for its Summer Food Program, which provides free meals for people in need.

Youth Nutrition Programs Manager Mary Augustine says that a slight shortage of volunteers for the seasonal program can likely be attributed to fear towards COVID. She seeks to ensure potential staff that health recommendations are being adhered to, and volunteer shifts are tailored to people’s comfortability.

“Within my program, schools shutting down puts an extra strain on families to come up with those meals that are supplied during the school day,” Augustine says. “We know that’s an extra burden and can put a strain on food resources, and people are self-quarantining, so that can cause food insecurity.”

Augustine says that morning shifts from 8 to 10AM and afternoon shifts from 1 to 3PM are available, where volunteers can expect to build and package meals, as well as deliver them for distribution to the public.
