Red Cross officials are in desperate need for blood

The American Red Cross says its blood supply is at “historic” lows, and urges people in Oregon and elsewhere to donate.

Red Cross officials say their organization provides 40% of the nation’s blood, so if more isn’t provided, transfusions for patients may be delayed.

“I would say it’s worse off than we’ve seen in an entire decade,” Angel Montes told KLCC. He’s is the regional donor services executive for the Red Cross. He says holiday activities and COVID-19 have hampered the usual spike they see in the fall.

“The travel, the less donations, the pandemic…all of that has really caused us, the Red Cross, to be facing a really dangerous situation right now.”

With blood supplies at critical levels, the American Red Cross is doing its best to incentivize blood drives across Oregon.

Montes says between now through December 16th, donors can get a ten dollar Amazon gift card. And for those who sign up afterwards up until January 2nd, they’ll get a long-sleeved Red cross t-shirt.

“…to honor those donors that are helping us save lives,” said Montes.

“It just ultimately is just thanking all of our donors for coming in to donate blood. And most importantly for remembering even with the holidays and everything that’s going on, we have a lot of people that need blood, and we want to make sure that blood is available for them when they need it.”

Montes says the Red Cross is especially in need of Type O blood.

Donors are urged to schedule appointments at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. There’s no waiting period for donors who’ve received the COVID vaccines, booster, or flu shot, as long as they’re free of symptoms.
