In 2019, 41% of surveyed Oregon community college students experienced food insecurity. Statewide, roughly 1 in 4 Oregonians are experiencing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To help people put more food on the table, KLCC is hosting a virtual information session on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

Community members statewide can learn best practices for applying, how to appeal your application if wrongfully denied, and other benefits people could be eligible for if they apply for the federal program.

The event will include a short presentation from Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon and SNAP-Ed with the Oregon State University Extension Program. An employee from the Oregon Department of Human Services will also be present to help answer community members’ questions. You can send questions in advance about applying for SNAP by emailing news@klcc.org.

Someone will be present to answer questions submitted in Spanish.

The online event will be Thursday, May 13 from 6-7:30pm. This is part of a project about college access for students who are low income or experiencing homelessness. To listen and read those stories, please visit klcc.org beginning May 10.

Community members can register here to participate and ask questions during the event. You can also view the meeting live via YouTube our the KLCC Facebook account.
