Heavy Rainfall And Potential Flooding Coming To The Region This Week

Linda Maria

A wet weather system moving into the region Monday is expected to bring heavy rainfall and concerns for flooding.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for the central and northern Oregon coast through Wednesday afternoon, while a flood watch goes into effect Monday night for the Willamette valley, the coast, and communities to the north.

Four to eight inches of rain is expected across the higher terrain with around two inches for the interior valleys and three to six inches near the coast range. The rain will be heavy at times, and with snow levels above 6,000 feet, snow melt may contribute to excessive runoff.

The National Weather Service says excessive rainfall could lead to river flooding as well as flooding of small streams and urban areas. Heavy rain could result in landslides, and there is a possibility of debris flows across areas burned by the 2020 wildfires. This includes the areas burned near the Echo Mountain Complex, Beachie Creek, Holiday Farm, and Riverside fires.

The primary concerns for potential flooding will be creeks and rivers draining from the Oregon Coast range, along with creeks and smaller rivers in the Willamette Valley, Southwest Washington, and the Columbia Gorge.

The heaviest rainfall will come Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, followed by an additional heavy rain late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.
