Eugene City Council to Vote on Ride Hailing Service Plan

Eugene City Council is expected to vote next week on a plan to bring Uber, and other ride hailing services, back to the city. Currently, the popular taxi alternatives are not operating in Eugene. KLCC’s Deonna Anderson has more.

The proposed changes to a 2015 policy would establish a periodic audit of company records and a per-trip fee, collected by the city.

Another change would allow Transportation Network Companies – or TNCs – to conduct their own criminal background checks, rather than the Eugene Police. Here’s Jay Mayernik, Oregon Taxi’s general manager, at Monday’s city council meeting.

“Both myself and the company I represent recognize the demand for TNCs in this evolving industry,” he says. “However the changes made to the city code in attempt to lure them cannot be those pertaining to public safety, such as background checks.”

Other issues that came up included the potential for insurance fraud and drivers’ access to the Eugene airport.
