Anti-Trump Demonstrators Decry Cabinet Nominees

Brian Bull

Dozens of anti-Trump protesters staked out a traffic intersection near the federal courthouse in Eugene, today.  KLCC’s Brian Bull reports.

People waved signs, many showing Trump’s cabinet picks with red lines drawn through their names or faces.  Controversial nominees include former Texas Governor Rick Perry for Department of Energy head, and former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State.

Demonstrator Michele Piastro says she’s not sure where the country’s going.

“And we hope that people will consider other candidates," she tells KLCC.  "Whether or not it’s too late, who knows.  But we’re also here to thank our representatives, for what they’re doing.”

Oregon’s Democratic senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley are among the critics of the Trump administration.

Marc Schlossberg, of the group, Take Action Eugene, says the rally here is partly to thank both men.

“For standing up for progressive values that Oregon holds and to urge them to continue to be strong and vocal to oppose many of the unqualified cabinet nominees that Trump is putting forward.”

Schlossberg says they’ll keep scrutinizing President Trump on issues they consider critical to Oregon, including the environment.
