Lane County Explores Another Attempt At A Courthouse Bond

Rachael McDonald

Lane County Commissioners hope to try again to convince voters to support a bond to fund a new courthouse in Eugene. The first attempt was rejected last May.

The May ballot measure asked for a 154 million dollar bond to help fund a state-of-the-art courthouse to replace the old one. County Commissioner Jay Bozievich says the size and cost of the project was one reason voters didn’t agree. He’d like more time to explain the need for a new building.

“The courthouse was built in 1959. The population was less than half of what it is now. And we just need a modern courthouse that has the adequate capacity for the future of Lane County as we grow beyond even where we are here. But I want a courthouse that the public can support.”

County leaders plan to hold public meetings on a potential bond in the next few months. Bozievich says the legislature has set aside 87 million dollars in matching funds until the end of the biennium, June 2021.
