The Battle For Second Place Continues Among Oregon Cities

Rachael McDonald

Eugene’s population continues to rise, and the city remains the second largest city in Oregon. That’s according to new figures released by Portland State University.

It’s often said that no one remembers who comes in second. But two Oregon cities have an ongoing rivalry for the title of “second largest city in the state.”

Portland is far and away the largest, but Salem and Eugene are in a fight for the number two slot. The US Census Bureau gives the honor to the state’s capital city. But researchers at Portland State University continue to rank Eugene as the second largest Oregon city. The school released updated figures this month. PSU’s Population Research Center and the Census Bureau use slightly different methods to come up with their estimates.

The discrepancy will be resolved, for a time at least, when official numbers are released from the 2020 census.
