Trieger Appears To Have The Edge In Lane County Commissioner Race

As of Tuesday night, Laurie Trieger was ahead of Joel Iboa in the race for the position three seat on the Board of Lane County Commissioners.

Trieger told KLCC she thinks her experience gave her the edge.

“I think one of the differences is just the experiences I have in the community professionally, as a volunteer, and personally as someone who has received county services.” Trieger said. “My 360 degree view and understanding of what the county and personally as someone who’s received county services, the services that are delivered and what they mean to people in the community and how they are reflected in the work I’ve done.”

Trieger and Iboa were the top two vote-getters in the May primary.

Iboa told KLCC he’s proud of his campaign. He said he was the first in his family to graduate from college, the University of Oregon.

“Was born and raised in Eugene.” Iboa said. “I’m the proud son of immigrants. And I ran to become Lane County’s first LatinX commissioner. So, already this has been a really historic campaign.”

Iboa and Trieger share many progressive views but different life experiences.

Iboa, 28, is Coalition Manager for Causa Oregon, an immigrant rights organization. Trieger, 57, ran a public health nonprofit, the Lane Coalition for Healthy and active youth.

The number three seat on the Lane County Board, representing South Eugene, has been held by Pete Sorenson for more than 20 years. He has decided to retire.
