Oregon’s longest-running House Representative is staying on as Chair of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for the 117th Congress.
Peter DeFazio has been chair since 2019, and a member of the committee since 1987. The Oregon Democrat says he’s humbled by his colleagues’ support, and that he’ll push for modernizing infrastructure across the U.S. to strengthen the economy while also addressing climate change.
DeFazio says this means bringing the country’s infrastructure out of the 1950s by implementing “smarter, safe, greener” infrastructure that cuts carbon pollution.
Talks between House Democrats and President Trump broke down last year, for a $2 trillion infrastructure plan. DeFazio says he welcomes the incoming Biden administration in revisiting the issue.
