House Democrats Friday introduced a resolution to block President Trump’s emergency declaration on border security. KLCC’s Rachael McDonald spoke with Springfield Democrat Peter DeFazio.
Oregon’s 4th District Representative Peter DeFazio says it will be tough to get the two-thirds majority needed to make the resolution veto-proof. But he says Trump’s emergency declaration opens the door to executive powers that could be used maliciously.
“I don’t think it’s a door we should go through. I think we should stick with 3 branches of government and not have an overly… The executive is too powerful and it was too powerful before Trump got there.”
DeFazio says he’s been trying to fix the war powers resolution which allows a president to put troops into a war without congressional authority. DeFazio is head of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He’s pushing for answers about the president’s lease of the Trump Hotel in D.C. which is under his oversight now.
