Lane Community College Declares Itself A Sanctuary Campus

Lane Community College

The Lane Community College Board of Education Wednesday declared the Eugene college a sanctuary campus.

In its resolution, the board states that Lane supports a diverse population regardless of race or religion. It also resolves that the college will “protect students from intimidation, unfair investigation and deportation and will take every legal measure to support students.” LCC President Mary Spilde says she’s proud of the board’s decision. She met this week with students from Syria and Iran and other countries included in President Trump’s Executive order banning immigrants.
Spilde: “It was just wonderful to talk to these students about why they came here, what they think about Lane, which was universally, I feel so supported here at Lane, and how much they love this country. And they love being here. And I think they bring a richness to our community, both at Lane and in the broader community.”
Trump has said he’d withhold federal funds from sanctuary jurisdictions. Spilde says the LCC policy is in compliance with state and federal law.
