Lane County has seen a spike in new cases of COVID-19. There are 23 new cases of the virus as of Thursday. Lane County Public Health Spokesperson Jason Davis said many of the new cases come from small gatherings, often with family, when people let their guard down.

“The real key factor if we want to drive change, slow the spread and have COVID not be another problem that our community is trying to deal with is to reduce the size of your gatherings and if you’re going to have a gathering please do follow those health recommendations.” Davis said. “Keeping that distance between you and others, wearing a mask, and also just practicing good general hygiene.”

Davis said public health is bracing for more cases resulting from the wildfire.

As of Thursday there are a total of 917 confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 in Lane County. There have been 14 deaths related to COVID-19 here.

The Oregon Health Authority reported 215 new confirmed and presumptive cases of covid-19 bringing the state total to 30,060 Thursday. The state’s death toll remained at 512.

The Oregon State Public Health laboratory resumed normal operations Wednesday after a three-day closure caused by HVAC problems and related poor indoor air quality. The lab is once again accepting and testing specimens.
