The Eugene-Springfield NAACP is teaming up with Café Soriah this Memorial Day to celebrate the end of Ramadan and support communities of color affected by COVID-19.
The NAACP chapter has celebrated Memorial Day with a barbecue at the historic Mims House in Eugene since 2011. This year will be a little different with pandemic protocols. Meals will be provided by Chef Ib Hamide of Soriah for people to enjoy onsite or pick up. Hamide’s restaurant was vandalized at the beginning of the month of Ramadan. He says there was a huge outpouring from the community, with letters of support and purchases of to-go orders. Hamide says he wanted to give back to the community. The event coincides with Eid, the end of Ramadan.
NAACP Executive Director Eric Richardson says the theme this year is “Breaking Bread together in Freedom” to honor the connection between African Americans and Memorial Day.
There will be 100 meals delivered to the Mim’s House on Memorial Day. The event is also a fundraiser for the International Student Assistance Fund.
