The forecast is calling for thunderstorms this week in western Oregon and fire officials say they’re prepared for possible fire starts. They’re also asking the public to take precautions to prevent human-caused fires.
Last summer, the Terwilliger fire burned almost 12,000 acres of the Willamette National Forest.
District Ranger, Darren Cross, says that blaze is contained but it flared up recently. He says fires can get into the underground root system and, even after winter weather, still be burning.
“So we’re just asking people, we are getting into fire season, and it’s super important that people are aware that things are dry. We’ve already had fires in this area.”
Cross says they currently have their full suite of firefighters at the ready in case of another fire.
