Springfield City Council Will Appoint Interim Mayor Next Month

wikimedia commons

SpringfieldCity Councilors expressed surprise and concern during a short meeting Monday evening, after the announcement over the weekend from Mayor Christine Lundberg that she’s stepping down.

Councilor Sheri Moore mentioned at the virtual meeting that the Springfield Mayor and City Council positions are unpaid.

“This is a volunteer position as all of us are.” Moore said, “Christine has not been paid for her time and energy that she’s put into this city. And I think that that is not, people don’t understand that. I don’t know what they think but they don’t think that we’re just volunteers and we are.”

The City Council will discuss appointing an interim mayor at their September 8th meeting. That appointee will serve out the rest of the Mayor’s current term which ends in January 2021. The council will appoint someone to fill the vacancy in the next term. They may decide to appoint the same person to fill both vacancies, or appoint a different person for each term.
