UO Receives Over $5 Million for Just Futures Institute, Prison Education Program Expansion

University of Oregon

The University of Oregon has received over $5 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to expand programs across campus.

$4.52 million—the largest humanities award in UO history—will be used to fund a new research platform for racial and climate justice. In partnership with University of Idaho and the Whitman College in Washington, the Pacific Northwest Just Futures Institute will allow researchers to develop interdisciplinary conversations across campuses.

Some of the topics the program will address includes how melting glaciers disproportionately affect people of color, and how climate change is damaging traditional food sources for Indigenous communities.

The Mellon Foundation also awarded $481,000 to the UO’s Prison Education Program. These funds will support the expansion of humanities courses for people who are incarcerated, as well as UO students.
