The International Olympic Committee announced Monday the Tokyo games will open July 23rd, 2021. With that pin in the calendar, a timeline for the Track and Field Olympic trials and the World Championships in Eugene can begin to take form.
The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, says the new dates were chosen to fit the international sports calendar and to keep everyone safe. “This is a huge challenge, and it’s unprecedented," said Bach. "We don’t have a blueprint, we have no experts to refer to.”
Bach sites having to make new plans with venues, sponsors, broadcasters, and each Olympic federation. TrackTown USA says in a statement it’s actively seeking new dates for the team trials at Hayward Field in Eugene.
The World Athletics championships will move to 2022. The governing body says it’s working with organizers at Oregon21 to reschedule the international event at Hayward Field.
