Crews are working to clear Sunday’s landslide on coastal highway 101 north of Florence. The road isn’t expected to reopen until Tuesday.
Lou Torres is a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation. He says the hillside has been saturated by recent rains.
Torres: “We had a chunk of the hillside basically slide onto the highway so it closed both lanes. And there’s quite a bit of rocks and trees that have to be cleared as well.”
Highway 101 south of the Cape Creek tunnel has experienced slides before.
People hoping to travel between Florence and Yachats will have to go inland, using highways 126, 36 and 20.
