Umpqua Community College Will Have An Armed Sheriff's Deputy On Campus

Umpqua Community College

An armed sheriff's deputy will be on patrol at Umpqua Community College as soon as Monday. The school in Roseburg is beefing up security after the mass shooting that left 10 people dead on October 1st.

U.C.C has had Oregon State Police and others helping out on campus since the shootings. Anne Marie Levis is spokeswoman for the college.

Levis: "We wanted to have just some additional help. We have security on campus and we wanted to have something that was more a permanent basis at least for the rest of the year. And this seemed like a nice partnership with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office."

U.C.C. is paying the county 30 thousand dollars for the deputy through June of next year.
The armed Sheriff's Deputy will be on campus 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. The college had considered hiring an armed guard about a year ago, but opted against it.
