Vandals Destroy Plantings Along Amazon Creek In Eugene

City of Eugene

Vandals uprooted about 100 trees planted along Eugene’s Amazon Creek. The trees were planted last month in honor of The Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service.

The trees were ripped out of the ground and thrown into the creek in west Eugene between Oak Patch and City View. Kelli Darnell with the city says they were planted to help restore native habitat to the creek.
Darnell: “This is an area that we definitely want to turn into a more native habitat along the creek so we will try to find ways to keep restoring this area. For right now we’re going to take a pause and assess some of the trees we were able to salvage from the creek.”
Darnell says a tree-planting 2 years ago at the same location was also vandalized. Almost all the trees were lost.  Damage from this recent act is estimated at more than 3-thousand dollars. Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact Eugene Police.
