UPDATE: As of 10:05am today (6/6) Eugene Police report the bike was recovered thanks to local cyclists who tracked it down.

Someone stole a bike from a cyclist on a cross country bike race who stopped in Eugene Monday.

The victim had gone into Safeway on Coburg Road. He left his bicycle unlocked outside. When he came out of the store, the bike and trailer were gone.
Eugene Police sergeant Greg Magnus:
“It definitely is a case of bad luck and bad timing. I mean had it been another time, another place, nothing like this would have happened. The big thing is just be aware of your surroundings, where you’re leaving your property and certainly with a bicycle, locking it up. We do have quite a bit of bicycle theft here in Eugene.”
Later, a tipster saw the thief with the bike and trailer outside a KFC on River Road and snapped a photo, which is on our website.
The bike is a Kestral model 4000 pro SL. The trailer is a Burley Nomad with a yellow cover.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Eugene Police.
