City Club of Eugene: What Will Move Oregon Education Forward?

Eugene 4J School District

September 19, 2014 City Club of Eugene airs Monday, September 22, 2014 on KLCC.

Moving Oregon education forward requires both short- and long-term planning. Superintendent Berman will discuss some strategies that have the potential for helping along that forward movement. He will address their alignment with statewide strategic education initiatives such as the Common Core State Standards and the Smarter Balanced assessments.

Berman will also describe strategies that the Eugene School District is implementing to take a significant leap forward in ensuring the success of all students. During the past two years, he has focused on creating the foundation for systemic schools, established data systems to drive essential district decision-making, and implemented an independent facilities analysis to frame the district’s long-term facilities plan. He initiated professional development opportunities for teachers in a move designed to turn teachers from isolated practitioners into collaborative teams.

During almost two decades as a school superintendent, Berman has led school districts both larger and smaller than 4J. He earned his BA from the University of Wisconsin, a Master of Education from the University of Maine, a second master’s degree and his Doctor of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
