Lane County High Schoolers Can Experience A Day In The Life Of A Utility Worker

EWEB

The Eugene Water and Electric Board will host the construction and utilities career fair Thursday for Lane County high school students.

More than 500 Lane County high school students will have the opportunity to work in construction, utility trade and road maintenance for a day. Joe Harwood, spokesman for EWEB says the idea is to inspire young people to pursue this kind of career.

Harwood: “We’re all experiencing job openings in trades related fields as older employees retire. And so the career fair on Thursday its part of our efforts to encourage younger people to seek careers in what really are well paying trades jobs.”

The Oregon Department of Transportation, Lane ESD, and the Northwest College of Construction will be onsite. Students will be allowed to operate heavy equipment, learn how to repair water pipes, climb power poles and do surveying. To qualify for these jobs high school graduates would need additional vocational training or a two year degree.
