Oregon State University has expanded its smoke-free policy to prohibit the use of any tobacco products by anyone-- on all its properties. Implementation of the total tobacco ban, will include increased health services access to help people quit.
OSU adopted a smoke-free campus policy for all students, employees and visitors in 2012. Now, all forms of tobacco-- combustible smokes, chewing and dipping, hookah, and vaping products--are prohibited.
In a 2018 OSU study, a majority of faculty, staff and students approved the tobacco-free policy.
Study author, OSU Professor Marc Braverman (with the School of Social and Behavioral health Sciences and College of Public Health and Human Sciences) has researched tobacco for 30 years. He says the expanded policy is about more than limiting secondhand smoke.
OSU Professor Marc Braverman led the 2018 study on the Corvallis campus which showed strong support for a tobacco-free policy.

“Well we’re concerned with everybody’s health,” says Braverman, “but we feel it’s important to educate students about the need to protect their own health and that tobacco is a lethal product.”
Braverman says University Health Services is stepping up to help any seeking to stop using tobacco products.
The tobacco-free policy applies at all Oregon State-owned or controlled properties, including athletics venues.
