Reopening Lane County: Eugene Mayor Sees Steady Progress, Praises Citizens

Lane County Public Health video

Elected officials say Lane County appears to remain on track to apply for Phase 2 of re-opening communities. Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis says seeing many businesses and city programs open is encouraging.

“It gives me hope when I see people safely and cautiously going back to their favorite stores or restaurants,” she said. “Or hear the laughter of children playing in small groups in their neighborhoods. These are all signs that we are making slow steady and safe progress. Thank you.”

Along with praise, Vinis urges continued vigilance with physical distancing. The soonest the county could enter Phase 2 is June 5th.

Public Health has reported no new COVID-19 cases since last Friday—keeping the countywide total at 66 confirmed with 1 presumptive case. Spokesperson Jason Davis says an additional 27 people are “under monitoring” for symptoms of the virus and are checked on twice a day by contact tracers.

There have been over ten thousand standard tests and 675 sentinel tests performed in the area. Davis says it’s good news to have a relatively low number of cases testing positive from such a high number of tests.
