As communities reel in the midst of evacuations and devastating fires in the region, Lane County Public Health reports COVID-19 continues to claim lives and sicken people.  Meantime,  in neighboring Douglas County, health officials report zero new cases.

Twelve Lane County residents have now died from the novel coronavirus. Since last weekend, 39 new cases have been identified.

Health officials say 53 people are considered infectious. This remains one of the highest active case counts seen in the county at any given time. To date, Lane County has seen a total of 814 cases.

In Douglas County, fire and emergency crews continue to battle wildfires up the North Umpqua Highway and residents, homes and businesses continue to be inundated with heavy smoke and ash.

But, Douglas County health officials report good news regarding their COVID-19 case count. As of Wednesday, there were NO new positive test results.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Douglas County remains at 182.
