A new affordable housing development in Roseburg is set to open in April this year, and will begin accepting applications for eligible renters on Jan. 15
Deer Creek Village is one the biggest developments Douglas County has seen since 2013. The 68-unit complex will provide affordable housing for individuals and families with a preference for veterans.
Merten Bangemann-Johnson, the Chief Executive Director of NeighborWorks Umpqua, said the $18 million project may only make a small dent in the state's housing crisis, but it's an important one.
“This is family housing and ultimately we really do hope and think this will impact a cross section of our community," Bangemann-Johnson said. "And it will also impact a lot of families with kids who may currently really struggle to provide the home that they want to provide their kids with.”
Bangemann-Johnson added the development, which was overseen by NeighborWorks Umpqua, is a testiment to the capability of nonprofit developers.
"We're developing and building this for the next 5o years and not to maximize our return, and then get out of this project in a relatively short period of time," he said. "It's a really high-quality development."
The apartments will be managed by Umpqua Community Property. Partners for the project include U.S. Bank, Oregon Housing and Community Services, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Oregon Community Foundation, Enterprise Community Partners, Roseburg Urban Renewal Agency, and Rose and Robert Rothstein.
