As Campgrounds Open, Officials Urge Respect

Oregon State Parks

The limited re-opening of Forest Service and State Parks camping is great news for outdoor-loving Oregonians. Still, officials say, it’s important to follow Phase One guidelines, and be respectful.

By the end of May, Oregon State Parks will list the campgrounds opening June 9th, primarily to people with existing reservations. Chris Havel, with Oregon State Parks, says, “What’s going on right now is our managers are sitting down with pen and paper, literally, and drawing out schedules to see where we have enough staff to provide coverage and where we don’t.”

Havel says the budget is tight, so campers need to do some work that parks staff usually does. “Your behavior at a park will really determine success here," he says. "So keeping your site clean, keeping ahold of your pets, keeping the noise down during quiet hours.”

Havel says visitors should stay close to home to limit the spread of disease, maintain six feet of distance from people outside the household, and be kind to hard-working park staff.

Havel advises checking the OSP website before venturing out, because services and closures can change. The site also details important things to know about what amenities are available and what to bring with you.
