After the Trump Administration announced Tuesday morning it’s ending the DACA program, a crowd filled Eugene’s Free Speech Plaza for a hastily organized noon protest. They rallied in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Chanting: “DACA’s under attack! Stand up Fight Back!”
When Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the roll-back of DACA he referred to the rule of law. But University of Oregon student Manuel Mejia Gonzalez is with the student advocacy group MEChA.
“I want to talk to you about morality and law because I think it’s one of the biggest points of confusion for folks when we talk about immigration. The fact that something is in the law doesn’t mean that it’s something that’s moral. I want to remind folks that this state was founded on exclusion laws.”

Gonzalez and others urged people to contact their lawmakers in support of the DACA program.
Gonzalez: “We need to be advocating for the most vulnerable folks in our community because that makes us a stronger community. [cheers]”
The Trump Administration says it’s phasing out DACA in 6 months.
