DeFazio: I Can Work With Trump, And Wield Oversight Of His Interests, Activities
Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio says he can both partner with - and hold accountable – President Donald Trump.
The Democrat is Ranking Member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He says there’s already 140,000 bridges in the U.S. in serious need for repair or replacement…and he’ll need to work with Trump to garner support on both sides of the aisle.
At the same time, DeFazio says he can investigate the President on certain matters, including whether Trump is illegally profiting from his Washington D.C. hotel. He dismisses notions that there’s a conflict.
“I’ve been in Congress for 32 years, and until the last two years, there has been no reluctance or hesitation on the part of Congress under either Democratic or Republican administration to engage in its constitutional duty as a third and co-equal branch to exert oversight," says DeFazio.
"So I don’t see any kind of conflict there to tell the truth. None whatsoever.”
With Democrats taking over key positions on House Committees, political watchers say President Trump will be subjected to oversight he hasn’t had from his fellow Republicans since taking office.
