Beginning this week, employees of banks, taverns and any place that asks for ID may start to see new, more colorful Oregon driver's licenses.
In the first major upgrade in 15 years, the new licenses feature a vertical orientation for drivers under 21, as well as holograms and designs that show up under infrared light.
David House, with the Oregon DMV, says, "Those are not just for beauty, those are for security. It makes it very hard to duplicate or alter a card that's designed like this." He says a couple of offices near Salem will pilot the new cards this week, and all DMV locations should have them by March.
House emphasizes current driver's licenses remain valid until their expiration dates.
