Finally, Oregon DMV offices will accept credit and debit cards as payments. All 56 Department of Motor Vehicle locations will have the equipment installed by the end of the summer.
David House is spokesman for the DMV. He says for decades the agency has only accepted checks and cash because of concerns about the 2 percent service charge for electronic transactions.
“The legislature put together a customer service task force and they recommended we start doing it anyway because we’ve reached a point where people are doing so many transactions with their cards, even very small purchases like a cup of coffee.”
House says the DMV did a pilot study on the system in April. It went well. Over the summer, a vendor will install the systems and train employees. House says people can find out if an office already takes cards by checking the DMV website.
