Springfield City Councilors will choose an interim Mayor from amongst themselves. That’s the upshot of Monday’s work session.
After Christine Lundberg suddenly stepped down as Mayor last month, some members of the public called for selection of an interim mayor from outside the council. But, as councilor Joe Pishioneri pointed out, the city councilors were elected by the voters of Springfield.
“I believe that the citizens have already shown us what they want and that’s by voting us all into office to represent them.” Pisioneri said. “And I think that that is our primary duty is to that we are representing the citizens. They asked us to represent the best way we can.”
Councilors who want to be considered for mayor will submit written answers to four questions by the 12th. Council will meet again in regular session on October 19th when they will vote on the candidates.
There will then be a potential council seat open. The council has not decided whether the interim mayor would serve through the remainder of the year or the remainder of the existing term.
