Rep. Mike Nearman Stripped Of Responsibilities, Faces Fine For Allowing Capitol Breach

An Oregon lawmaker who allowed far-right demonstrators into the state Capitol last month now faces formal discipline and fines. He’s also losing unfettered access to the statehouse.

Addressing his fellow House members Monday, Representative Mike Nearman announced a set of terms he’d agreed to in the wake of the Capitol breach he set off December 21.

“I will not allow any unauthorized personnel into the capitol.” Nearman said. “I agree to rescind any badge access that provides 24 hour access to the capitol. I agree to provide 24 notice to the Legislative Equity office and legislative administrator prior to each trip to the capitol.”

Consequences won’t end there. House Speaker Tina Kotek also stripped the Republican of his committee duties for the upcoming legislative session. She will fine Nearman $2,000 for damage that occurred after he let demonstrators into the building.

Kotek also announced a formal complaint that could lead to Nearman’s expulsion, and called on him to resign.
