Affordable Housing Nears Reality At Developing Downtown Site

A new apartment complex in Downtown Eugene’s Market District is releasing a general wait-list next week. The 50 unit facility will be for low-income tenants.

Nestled in an area thick with shopping, dining, and entertainment venues, Market District Commons provides access to public transit and 24-hour emergency maintenance as well.

Jacob Fox is with Homes for Good, one of the partners in the district development project. He broke down who the units are intended for, including 15 set aside for the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s project-based vouchers (PBV) program.

“For a one-person household, that could serve someone that’s making no income -perhaps experiencing homelessness- up to $14,000 a year," explained Fox.  "And then for the general unit, a one-person household can make up to $24,000 a year.”

All prospective tenants must meet low-income guidelines to qualify. For Eugene, that’s 60% or less of the area’s median income.

A Homes for Good representative says based on the current construction timeline, the building will be complete the first week of October, with move-in occurring soon after completion. All units will be leased before of the end of 2020.

The PBV Wait list opened July 7 at 8 a.m. and closes Tuesday July 14 at 4 p.m. The general wait list opens July 15 at 8 a.m. and stays open.
