Crews In Oregon Battle Several Major Fires

Inciweb

Five major fires are burning in Oregon, including the largest fire in the United States, in Klamath County. The Bootleg Fire was at more than 201,000 acres in size Tuesday. It’s burning actively on the Fremont-Winema National Forest, about 11 miles north of the town of Sprague River.

A fire northeast of Sisters has grown to about 5,700 acres and was 5% contained as of Tuesday morning. The Grandview Fire started Sunday and grew quickly.

Raven Reese is acting Public Information Officer with the Deschutes National Forest. She said a new team has taken over and more resources are arriving to fight the fire, which has slowed in growth.

“It is still very hot and dry,” Reese said. “And there might be some wind moving in. But, it’s definitely doing better than it was that first night.”

There are still evacuations in place and some forest areas are closed to the public. There's a virtual community meetingWednesday evening at 6:00.

The Jack Fire east of Glide in Douglas County is at about 13,000 acres. According to Public Information Officer Mary Nordeen, some of that growth is due to burnouts by crews to build containment lines. She said firefighters are making good progress with 15 percent containment as of Tuesday. Nordeen said they’re looking forward to cooler temperatures Wednesday.

“Everything helps a little bit,” Nordeen said. “And we’ve been able to move resources around to other parts of the fire now as those containment lines grow and strengthen.”

Highway 138 remains closed from Steamboat Creek to milepost 55.  Evacuations are also in place.

Another fire in the Detroit Ranger District was estimated between 80 and 100 acres Tuesday. The Bruler Fire has potential to spread according to fire officials. There are closures in the area.
