U of O Ramps Up COVID Mass Vax Efforts For Students, Staff

University of Oregon

On Thursday, the University of Oregon hosted its second of four planned COVID-19 vax clinics at Autzen Stadium—conducted especially for college students and staff.

U of O spokesperson Kay Jarvis said the turn out has been impressive. All 4,600 vaccination slots have been reserved and there is a waiting list to ensure every available dose gets into an arm.

“We, like you, are concerned to see the increase in COVID-19 cases,” said Jarvis. “Campus is experiencing a similar increase in case numbers that is being seen regionally, across the country.”

Jarvis said the university is tackling the problem with weekly testing of residence hall students, immediate isolation of positive cases and quarantine of contacts.

According to Lane County Public Health officials, of the 25 active outbreaks in the county, 80% of them are classified as “college-age outbreaks.”

The U of O drive-through vax clinics at Autzen Stadium are being staffed by student employees with special lanes designated to receive walk up traffic and people arriving on bikes.

Jarvis said the vaccine supply for these clinics does not come from Lane County’s allotment and won’t reduce the availability to other community members. She added that students have also been scheduling through federal pharmacy partners to receive two shots of the Pfizer vaccine.

The UO’s Monitoring and Assessment Program (also called MAP) continues to provide free COVID-19 testing to anyone interested. Pre-registration is required. Public Health officials encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to “know your status” and help limit the spread of coronavirus.
