A new day service center for people suffering from cognitive disabilities or brain injuries opens Tuesday in Eugene. KLCC’s Brian Bull reports.

Sheltercare is opening the Uhlhorn Day Services Center at the Emmaus Lutheran Church on West 18th Avenue. It’ll serve patients diagnosed with Alzheimers, Parkinsons Disease, dementia, and other issues.  The center also provides family and caregiver support referrals, and support groups.

Susan Ban is ShelterCare’s Executive Director.  She says this type of service center has been long due for the area.

“There are nearly two dozen in the state that serve this population," says Ban.  "Lane County hasn’t had one.  And we’ve been encouraged by the state for some years to take a look at opening one, and it seemed like the right time.”

Ban adds that the Uhlhorn Day Services Center accepts Medicaid.  A $60,000 grant from PacificSource helped launch the program.
