On Tuesday, International Worker’s Day, Eugene activists are holding a solidarity share fair. It offers free essentials for people who are unhoused.
Serra Joy is one of the organizers of the monthly share fair event. She says it’s a welcoming space that tries to meet as many needs as possible. There will be food, entertainment, massage, and bike repair. Also, local service organizations will be there to help people access assistance. Joy says it’s also about connections and compassion. She says she recently saw a group of kids heckling a homeless person.
Joy: “And it’s heartbreaking. Unless we can show the next generation and our generation that we need to care about each other regardless of your social status, your economic status, that that is not where your worth as a human being lies then we’re leaving people alone and isolated in a world where we were never intended to be that way. We’re social creatures. We need each other.”
The Fair Share event is Tuesday, May Day, from 2 to 6 p.m. at First Christian Church in Eugene.
