Groundbreaking Kicks Off LCC Campus Remodels

Lane Community College

Today (Monday), Lane Community College begins remodeling and expanding their student center at the core of main campus. KLCC's Tiffany Eckert reports the 35 million dollar project is expected to take a little over a year.

Center Building was built nearly 50 years ago and it shows. Siding is peeling away, concrete walls and walks are blemished. Lane County voters approved an 83 million dollar bond six years ago. Now the community college is spending the last of that money to finance the remodel.

LCC President Mary Spilde helped break ground for the Center for Learning and Student Success or CLASS project. She says times have changed and the college needs to do the same.

Spilde:"Now we are educating students for the 21st Century and along with that comes the need for technology, lots of group work-students doing out of class work. Quiet places on campus for study so that students don't have to go out and sit in their car."

Spilde says for a while it will be like "living in a remodel" for students. The project will be done in phases beginning with moving the Titan book store. The makeover of the first floor should be completed by September 2015.

Tiffany joined the KLCC News team in 2007. She studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia and worked in a variety of media including television, technical writing, photography and daily print news before moving to the Pacific Northwest.
