Springfield Schools Keep Tests

The Springfield School Board Monday night decided it will not suspend administration of Smarter Balanced tests.

Board member Jonathan Light had proposed a moratorium, saying the new requirements are not good for kids. But the rest of the board felt it was too risky for the district to refuse to give the tests since they're required by law.
Springfield students have already started taking Smarter Balanced exams.

Board Chair Nancy Bigley says the district will continue looking at testing.

Bigley: "We're anticipating the results. We've heard what to expect from these results and I think when we weighed all that information we thought, you know, this is a chance for a bigger conversation about providing the best for our students at all time and making sure that we can use our experiences to better frame this test in the future."

The board plans to consider its process for hiring a new superintendent later in the year. They've appointed Susan Rieke- Smith to fill in as interim superintendent. Hertica Martin has resigned after two years as district leader.
